Because aggregates make up about 75% of the volume and weight of concrete, they play a very important role in the strength and behavior of concrete structures.

California’s hard rock quarries open up a new frontier in concrete design.

Throughout California, as sources of alluvial aggregates (sand and gravel) near depletion, mining is shifting to hard rock sources like Vulcan Material Company’s Chula Vista quarry, which produces a very durable volcanic rock called andesite.  Chula Vista’s unique andesite deposit can be used to make high-strength, high-performance concrete – including concrete with exceptionally high heat resistance.

Since the 1940’s, rock from Vulcan’s Chula Vista quarry has been used to build some of the region’s most iconic buildings, highways and bridges, as well as military and commercial harbor facilities throughout the Port of San Diego.  The quarry produces a wide range of aggregates for concrete and asphalt as well as rip rap and railroad ballast.

Join us for lunch and an eye-opening trolley tour of the quarry!  Vulcan will pick up SEAOC Convention attendees at the Hilton San Diego Resort and Spa at 10:00am and return you to the Resort by 2:00pm.  Attendance is limited to 100 guests.
